Barossa Valley - General Information

The Barossa Valley is a major wine-producing region and tourist destination of South Australia, located 60 km northeast of Adelaide. Read the label on a bottle of premium wine and if it's from the Barossa Valley, you know it's going to be good. It's a reputation this Australian wine region has worked hard to build over many years. Just one of the reasons that makes it your ideal wine touring destination.

The region's flagship wines are Barossa Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling. The product of two distinct zones - the warm, low-lying Barossa Valley and the higher, cool-climate Eden Valley - these are the styles that have put us on the world map.

With a rich winemaking and grape growing heritage dating back to 1842, and a profound and unique Silesian (German) influence, the Barossa Valley is probably Australia's most famous wine region. It is now rightly asserting not only its importance to the wine sector but also the inestimable value of its storehouse of century-old vines and historic wineries.

The wine industry plays a major role in the Barossa, being the main source of employment for many residents. The many hectares of vineyard are the most distinctive feature of the area, especially when viewed from the Mengler Hill lookout positioned on the range of hills that form one side of the valley itself.

The success of the wine industry has historically been celebrated every two years (odd numbers) with a week-long Barossa Valley Vintage Festival. The festival draws visitors from all over the world and has entertainment for all tastes including a huge street parade, concerts and gourmet dining.
